Getting along with others on a job can be a challenge for anyone. However, offshore oil rig jobs present a very different challenge. This is primarily true because you don't get to go home at night. So knowing how to get along with others is very important to maintaining a lasting career.
There will always be personality and attitude differences on any job. And there are bound to be conflicts at times. However, there are some things we can do to reduce or at least anticipate these awkward moments.
It goes without saying that first impressions go a long way towards influencing how people think about us. And whatever those first assessments are, people tend to stick with them. We tend to look to reinforce those initial judgments. So if you are considering an extended stay job on an offshore oil rig, it would be advisable to keep the following four principles in mind.
1. People like to be liked. So when you are friendly, you are saying...hey, I like you. Whether it is true or not...when you smile first, people tend to warm up to you. And that first impression can be a starting point for a favorable working relationship.
2. People like it when we're helpful. Who doesn't enjoy being served by others? It is rare to be unappreciated when you offer help to another. When you are helpful, others tend to see you as a likable person.
3. To the extent you are able, remain positive. There will be many things wanting to drag you down on an oil rig. But when you keep a good attitude, it tends to be infectious. So look for the positives and not the negatives.
4. Who likes working around an inflexible person? Most of us prefer the more flexible person if we have a choice. Being stubborn tends to block the path to any real productive work. So remain flexible and increase a positive working environment with your workmates.
Most work situations involve being with people. And the better you are at getting along with others, the more enjoyable and tolerable it can be. This reality is amplified on an offshore oil rig. Simply because, you have to be together for extended periods of time.
Obviously, even our best efforts at getting along can be unsuccessful. There will always be problem relationships. However, if you make these simple ideas a habit...they can go a long way towards making a better work environment on an oil rig.
